Why are you in business?

This blog typically looks at providing practical solutions to retail facility professionals, project managers and individuals involved in construction management. Today, we thought we would switch things up a little, and get a little philosophical. Don't worry though, we won't get too deep with it, we are just going to take a few steps back and look at the overall landscape of what we do.

If you travel back in time to 1993 and the birth of Royal Services Inc., you would see a family committed to solving problems that were preventing business owners from doing what they had decided mattered. Whether that be creating greeting cards for any occasion that show your loved ones just how much you care, creating industry leading footwear for long distance runners or walkers, or creating an environment where families could get together and enjoy a meal as a family.
Every business starts for some reason. A great show that ties into this is Shark Tank, which I am sure many of you are familiar with. I am always fascinated by the founder's story and what prompted them to take action. It might have been a poor experience, the need for a product that wasn't yet available, or a traumatic health experience that prompted them to make a difference. Whatever the reason, all business owners open the doors with a product or service that is going to make the lives of their customers better.

At Royal, this started off with the servicing of mechanical equipment for a national retailer, who wanted a partner to handle this challenge, instead of the associated expense and challenges that come with building an internal team. Our project managers delivered incredible value which made a significant impact on our client's operations. The trust in the relationship continued to grow, as did the challenges that they brought our way. Many of these challenges weren't things that we were already doing for other clients. In many cases, these were things that none of our team had ever experienced before. However, our North Star of Service That Solves, always challenges us to find solutions to any problems that our clients send our way.
Over the years this has led to the creation of 3 new departments to support the original facility maintenance team that we started with. To this day we still have the above retailer as a client (25 years for those of you who are trying to do the mental math!) but today we offer turnkey project management solutions and handle everything from design and construction, to technology deployment and ongoing maintenance and repair. All of this started with one service, a commitment to customer service, and a desire to solve our partners' challenges.
With this in mind, you probably already have a good idea about how we operate and what matters to our team here at Royal. Here are some key ideas that drive every decision that we make:
1. Integrity - Is this the right thing to do?
2. Will this SOLVE the problem?
3. We will never be, nor do we want to be, the lowest cost provider
4. You Get What You Pay For
5. We don't play games
6. We aren't interested in transactional engagements
7. We stand by our work
8. We treat our vendors as the most important members of our team
9. We always look long term
10. Did we solve the problem?
11. Are we driving value?
12. You need to consider the price-quality continuum
13. Service That Solves
Royal is a very special company founded on great values and made up of people who truly care about our clients. However, when you dig down we don't have any fancy gimmicks, we don't play tricks on our clients, and we don't have multi-million dollar marketing budgets. We focus on always doing the right thing knowing that everything else will take care of itself.
